Olimpia conquered the first of the four weekend tournaments scheduled for the preseason, edging Cantù 66-54 in the final game of Castelletto Ticino. Just like the day before, the defense got the job done, making up for an array of shooting mistakes. It’s a matter of heavy legs, familiarity to develop, absences, but also plain, silly mistakes, including two missed dunks, at least four lay-ups,probably more, three-pointers short. But the defense has been always there, the defense kept the game under control, consistently led by Shelvin Mack who had three steals, several deflections. Cantù was playing without two key players, like Wes Clark and Corban Collins, while Olimpia had six players unavailable because of National Teams commitments and injuries. The team led wire to wire, and in the second half the margin was never below the five-point line. Sergio Rodriguez was named Tournament’s MVP, and led the scorers with 14 clutch points, Ricky Moraschini added 11 including a buzzer beating three at the end of the first half that opened a consistent 14-point lead. “His game was the best news tonight, he did valuable things offensively, but I like that he was able to guard the opponent’s small forward when he consistently tries to post him up,” Coach Ettore Messina said.
